About the Author

Welcome to the Social Clinic—a place where all of us can serve as Social Clinicians and contribute to the examination and remedy of illness of society—the goal being to create greater Social Beauty.

I am a partly retired pediatrician and pediatric rheumatologist who now lives in the state of Washington.

I graduated from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) at La Jolla School of Medicine. Early in my pediatric rheumatology career I had the honor of playing a major role in developing the specialty of Pediatric Rheumatology in the Peoples’ Republic of China. Sequentially, I have practiced pediatric rheumatology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital/University of Cincinnati, Nationwide Children’s Hospital/Ohio State University, Alberta Children’s Hospital/University of Calgary, and at Children’s Hospital/Cleveland Clinic. Currently, I am Visiting Professor of Pediatrics, Department of Hospital Pediatrics, at Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

For the past 16 years I have focused on the international study and treatment of Susac Syndrome, a potentially devastating autoimmune disease that attacks the microvasculature in the brain, retina, and inner ear of young adults, causing ischemic brain injury, visual loss, and deafness.

In addition to Medicine, I have had a long-standing interest in social philosophy and geo-political/economic analysis. To sum up my social philosophy: I imagine a potential world that functions and behaves like one large collaborative network of local children’s hospitals—a creative symphony of unique, altruistic endeavors, all with common purpose—to serve children, Humanity, and the Earth itself and to create Social Beauty.

The “Notes from the Social Clinic” on this website are dedicated to my three daughters and 9 grandchildren, in hopes that these writings will contribute to the creation of a better world—more Social Beauty, for all of Humanity to enjoy.

Please feel free to download and share any of the “Notes from the Social Clinic.” Also, please feel free to communicate with me by email. Indeed, a main purpose of the Notes is to stimulate and facilitate helpful dialogue.
